The new deVOL Ceramics Studio

A few weeks ago our brilliant ceramics team packed up all their gear and moved to a brand new studio. We loved our little outbuilding at Cotes Mill but this new space is such an exciting opportunity for more kilns, more moulds, more extraordinary makers and more ideas! We already have so many exciting things in the pipeline!
Most recently, you may have spotted our new creamware shades. We’ve been wanting to add some wall lights to our collection for such a long time so we were so happy (and quite relieved) to see how much everyone loved them, phew!! The magic of these lights is the subtle crazing. It’s those little lines you see in certain lights that make something look timeworn. New but old, it’s a style we have fallen in love with and one that our makers have become so good at recreating in a really authentic and beautiful way. It looks like everyone else has become quite taken with them too, we now have a whole room solely dedicated to casting creamware shades!!
Don’t worry, there’s plenty of room for our pretty porcelain pendants too. Here’s Ellie slipcasting our frilly pleat lights in the new studio. It’s a fascinating process that involves pouring porcelain slip into moulds designed by our team. They are then drained and the remaining layer of slip is left to harden before we cut off the excess clay and fettle the edges, ready for firing. These delicate lights are left unglazed so they are milky white in the day and you get that sumptuous warm glow as the sun goes down.
To let you in on a little secret, we have even more lights coming out so watch this space!! We also have another very exciting new design launching very soon. Our founder and director, Paul, says they are his favourite thing we have ever made in our ceramics studio in over 4 years!! We’re still working out the kinks, it’s not easy to get them perfect but that’s the whole point!
