And the 2018 Architectural Digest Great Design Award Goes To…

We are absolutely over the moon to announce that the Elemental Kitchen, designed with Charlie Smallbone, has been chosen as a 2018 Architectural Digest Great Design award winner!! Architectural Digest is one of the most influential and highly regarded interior and design magazines in the world, it publishes nine international editions and inspires millions of design enthusiasts every single month, not only through the printed editions but all across social media and the web too. The annual AD Great Design awards celebrate what the magazine believes to be the truly best-in-class design from throughout the year, what an accolade it is to have been included, we couldn’t be more honoured and thrilled.
Announcing the winners yesterday, the magazine said the kitchen that debuted earlier this year at the Chelsea Flower Show as part of Caulfield’s bespoke Winter Garden ‘put a state-of-the-art spin on traditional conservatories’ letting the ‘indoor chef cook alfresco’. The collaboration, like so many things at deVOL, was quite spontaneous, it wasn’t planned or forced, just a chance meeting and a shared passion for design and all things kitchens that has turned into a brand new and rather unexpected kitchen range.
The Elemental Kitchen combines wood, marble and metal in a sleek and sharp contemporary kitchen – quite a different look for deVOL but it’s always good to push yourself and think outside of the box, and that’s exactly what we did with Charlie. One thing we were keen to still incorporate was the mix of natural materials, it’s something we have always been passionate about using in our designs – they effortlessly work in unison and have real longevity. The bold verdigris copper door panels were an exciting design challenge for our new metal workshop and worked so well with the black stained ash used throughout the kitchen but we’re already thinking of other ways to incorporate different materials into the design. We’ve been playing around with Carrara marble, distressed painted oak and crackled white enamel panels, but the possibilities are endless!!
Of course, the Elemental Kitchen is available as an indoor kitchen too, the striking design would bring a cool and contemporary edge to any home… although an outdoor kitchen is a pretty great idea! We’re always talking about beautiful rooms that bring the outside in, adding plants or painting cupboards in rich shades of green but imagine your kitchen actually becoming part of your garden. Caulfield’s bespoke conservatory has folding glass walls that are insulated for colder months and electronically controlled awnings perfect for giving a little shade on sunny days. It really was quite something to see this luxurious kitchen basking in the sunshine, the way the light highlights the natural beauty of the black ash and glimmers off the aged copper was completely captivating.
We just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone at Architectural Digest for including us in this year’s winners and to Charlie and Sue who kicked everything off and were so instrumental in the final look of the kitchen. And of course, to the Caulfield Company for inviting us to design something new and exciting for this incredible outdoor haven.
