The Petersham Kitchen
The delights of Petersham are endless, this very pretty village right on the banks of the Thames, only a stone’s throw from London, is a peaceful haven of delightful houses and countryside. It is home to the fabulous Petersham Nurseries, an eclectic garden centre like no other and definitely worth a visit. But for us the highlight of Petersham was this dark and atmospheric Shaker kitchen. We entered this hideaway cottage in a very private location and were instantly transported into a soft and calming place, dark woods and rich paints and some exceptional contemporary furniture. We actually didn’t want to leave, it was such a welcoming and away-from-the-world type of place. The kitchen was very carefully considered, the old chimney breast around the cooker was quite unusual and could easily have been overlooked, but keeping it added character and depth to the room.
The Iroko worktops and copper sink were such a soft and welcome change from stone and worked with the soft textures and colours perfectly. The central island was a vintage piece that had been painted in Pantry Blue to work with all the deVOL cupboards and the addition of a copper worktop and copper splashback finished the room off with a warm gentle glow. Fridges and appliances all hidden away behind big Shaker cupboards kept the colour palette consistent and the industrial lights were low and dark too, in fact every choice was a good one. This kitchen is the customers’ second deVOL Kitchen, very different from the first but these clever people worked with the light and space in their new home and came up with a very original and memorable room.
