The Cattle Shed Kitchen, North Norfolk
For anyone who has been to North Norfolk they will know what a special place it is, wild and beautiful, full of the most amazing birds and beaches and village after village of delightful pubs and glamorous little boutique shops. There are smokehouses and beach shacks selling fresh crabs and seafood and along all the roads in summer there are little sheds and stalls selling local summer berries and the finest just-picked vegetables. So imagine finding an old cattle shed, chatting to the farmer and then finding you have just bought a large selection of ramshackled buildings down a track in the middle of nowhere and have no experience in renovations!
Two years on and the family behind The Cattle Shed in Wighton, North Norfolk, are on the home straight with their first barn, a family hangout for the weekends and a retreat for paying customers. It all sounds quite idyllic, but furnishing such a huge space can seem quite daunting.
This deVOL Shaker Kitchen is on a big scale, yet it still seems to feel comfortable and homely and has the clever ability to feel both industrial and a little bit country chic. The big extraction unit sits perfectly next to the very domesticated Smeg Victoria range cooker and the grand brass pot filler. It’s the mix of concrete floors, brick walls and soft tones in the wooden worktops and copper sink that make this kitchen such a clever combination. We absolutely love the original artworks that were propped up around the room, these huge landscapes really added to the feeling of being in the wilds near the sea.
Everything in this deVOL Shaker Kitchen was really well considered and I have to congratulate Paul, our New York Showroom Manager, on designing a space that feels both communal due to its size yet perfectly cosy for a family too. Sometimes a big room is harder to get right as there is so much space to fill, but The Cattle Shed really did make some great decisions and the finished result is the kind of kitchen that makes you say wow!!!
