When it comes to designing your kitchen, there are so many different styles out there to choose from, and some are easier to achieve than others. So, I sat down with our Creative Director, Helen Parker, to chat about one of the most popular kitchen trends out there, modern rustic…
Hi Helen! When you’re creating a kitchen design scheme, how do you find the perfect blend of modern and rustic?
I would keep the main kitchen cupboards fresh and new and simple, with perhaps the exception of a vintage or industrial-style pantry. The accessories can be a mix but don’t overdo one look over the other. Vintage can often be eclectic and bohemian, but for a modern rustic look, I would focus on keeping each addition to the room well-considered and thoughtfully chosen.
What colour schemes work best in a modern rustic kitchen?
Lighter tones are best for this look, keep things natural both in the materials you use and accessories you include. Make sure your palette is very simple and avoid splashes of bright colours. If you want moody then still choose natural and soft pieces. Balance darker shades with brighter colours, nothing too harsh or contrasting, just a lighter hue to keep an overall feeling of calm.
Are there materials or textures that work especially well with the modern rustic aesthetic?
Textures are great for this look, rough-sawn woods, slubby fabrics, old floorboards and handmade crockery. They can be new or old, but the key is that they look natural and handmade. Touches of concrete and steel are a good addition, but not too much or you will lose the rustic element.
Would you say modern rustic kitchens work better with an open floor plan or more closed-off?
I guess an open-plan room feels more modern, but it’s more about keeping things uncluttered with a natural unfussy feel. Minimal styling and accessories will make even a small room feel more modern and clean.
When it comes to kitchen appliances and accessories, does a modern rustic kitchen benefit more from minimalism or a full collection on display?
I would try to keep most small appliances and accessories to a minimum, behind simple cupboards or neatly displayed on shelving. Larger appliances such as a fridge and cooker can be on display. I would avoid coloured or fancy appliances, but stainless steel or designs with a more industrial feel would be in keeping with the modern aesthetic.
Do you have any tips for lighting a modern rustic-style kitchen?
I would go for very simple vintage lights, nothing too wow or bold, maybe creamware or milk glass with delicate fittings and natural coloured flexes.
Are there any specific deVOL products you recommend to achieve this look?
